Green Campus Guidelines in EPCET

  • Bring food only as per the requirement to avoid wastage.

  • To serve food and drinking water in stainless steel utensils and disposable materials should be avoided.

  • Separate bins in campus to segregate waste into biodegradable, non-bio degradable and hazardous categories.

  • Instead of discarding waste paper, deposit it in a common Materials Recovery Facility in the campus.

  • Store electrical and electronic waste and hand it over periodically to College E-waste Collection centres to ensure its proper recycling.

  • Avoid flowers draped in plastic covers and flex items during public functions in campuses and welcome dignitaries with a flower pot.

  • Training classes should be given to class leaders and teachers in schools by the Resource Persons of Suchitwa Mission. Green Protocol teams should be constituted for monthly monitoring of activities.

1.Waste Management and Sustainable Green Campus :

East Point college of engineering and technology along with Eco club and NSS give emphasis on reducing the generation of waste materials and its proper disposal in the campus through the philosophy of “reduce, reuse and recycle”. Waste collection and disposal, including segregation of waste at the collection point in the EPCET campus is properly collected, transported, and disposed of in a safe and responsible manner. Segregation of waste at the collection point, as it helps to separate different types of waste, such as biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, and some E-waste to ensures that they are disposed of in an appropriate manner.

i) Solid Waste Management:

As part of the green initiative in the campus, the college always tries to reduce the waste through reuse, reduce and recycling which ensures the cleanliness and eco- balance in the campus. As part of the plastic-free campus initiative, the college ensures the green protocol in the various programs of the college. Green campus campaign authorities ensure the adoption of the green protocol in all the programs conducted and posters used in the campus to reduce plastic pollution. The college has ensured that different types of waste is collected in different bins. The collected waste is properly disposed in accordance to Government existing rules. Also, EPCET has provided sanitary napkin incinerator to handle the sanitary napkin waste generated in the college and hostel buildings. This ensures proper disposal of santiary waste in the campus

Type of Waste Waste management process at EPCET
Dry Segregated onsite and given to haulers, some dry waste like books, stationary etc is taken by ITC WOW
Wet Segregated onsite and donated as food to animal farms
E-waste NGO-Youth for seva , ITC WOW (Wellbeing out of Waste)
Sanitary napkins Incinerated in onsite sanitary napkin incinerator
Lab chemicals Diluted and disposed of onsite

ii) E-Waste Management:

E-waste can cause damage to human health as also the environment. Electronic goods are used at its optimum level by proper upgradation and maintenance which is done by the suppliers themselves. Periodic checking ensures the proper disposal of non-working electronic items. Computers, printers and other ICT equipments are disposed off through buy back scheme or the E- Waste generated in the campus are collected and disposed through dealers by inviting tenders.

Dry Waste Management at EPCET:

The college has recently signed MOU with ITC WOW (Wellbeing out of Waste). This MOU is intended to create a synergic alliance between both the Parties for the recycling dry-waste, Including E waste which is a vital element in the protection of environment. This is a great initiative taken by EPCET for sustainable waste management.

iii) Water and Waste Water Management:

Waste water treatment is a crucial aspect in EPCET for maintaining a healthy and sustainable environment. The process involves removing contaminants from sewage and effluent through physical, chemical, and biological treatments. The resulting sludge must be disposed of safely and regulations govern the discharge of treated waste water into the environment. EPCET have a responsibility to preserve the health of the environment and the communities they serve through best practices in waste water treatment.

Sewage Treatment Plant in EPCET:

College is having a sewage treatment plant of 20 MLD capacity. The STP is sufficient for treatment of 1 Lacs 40 Thousand Capacity of water. This treated water to be recycled and reused for irrigation, construction, cleaning, washing, flushing purpose (Except for drinking purpose, this can reduce daily consumption of 1 lacs to 17 thousand litters).

Water Efficiency Initiatives taken by college management:

Collection of RO rejected water: College management has made arrangement to collect RO rejected water from all RO drinking points and it collected water utilized for toilet and washroom actively.

Drip water irrigation and sprinkler water irrigation system for gardening: Drip water irrigation and sprinkler irrigation system is used for gardening. Treated waste water from above STP plant can be reuse for gardening purpose. It has helped reduce the fresh water consumption of college.

Rainwater Harvesting:

Rainwater harvesting has been implemented in the East point college of Engineering & Technology. It is a process of collecting and storing rainwater for current and future use. This solution helps the college conserve water and reduce its reliance on the borewell water. The collected rainwater is utilized for various purposes such as irrigation, cleaning and toilet flushing.Rain water harvesting system was incorporated and has been installed in the college building. The water from rooftops is collected through down pipes and discharged in the ground as well as in recharge pits near borewell through pipe lines in the campus. For storm water management the recharge pits, percolation pits and porous trenches are constructed to allow storm water to infiltrate inside the soil.
